Your matric year is a rollercoaster ride. A constant shift from excitement to stress. A journey filled with academic milestones, personal growth and a whirlwind of emotions. At Seventh Star, we understand the significance of this year and we’re here to support you every step of the way. In this article we present the ultimate matric student’s survival kit, packed with strategies and tools to help you not only survive but thrive in your final year.
2026 matric exam dates
The 2026 NSC exams start on 13 October and the last paper is on 26 November 2026 (Department of Basic Education). Check your own timetable on the DBE website or with your school. For a study plan that works, see Essential Exam Preparation Tips for South African Students.
Your Matric Survival Kit Essentials
1. Study Schedule and Planner
The foundation of success lies in effective planning. Create a study schedule that allocates time for each subject and balances study sessions with breaks. Use a planner to track assignments, deadlines and important dates to stay organised. It is very easy to fall behind and feel overwhelmed. Keeping track of everything that you need to do makes sure that you still have time to enjoy your final year at school – guilt free.
2. Quality Study Resources
Equip yourself with comprehensive study materials. Access textbooks, revision guides and online resources that align with your curriculum. At Seventh Star, we offer expert tutoring and valuable resources to help you excel. Don’t wait for a test or examination to get help. Incorporate past papers and mock examinations. This helps you become comfortable with the types of questions and time constraints you’ll face.
3. Support System
Managing stress is crucial for optimal performance. If you feel that you are not coping in any capacity, speak to a family member, a friend or teacher for extra support, encouragement, advice and a listening ear during both triumphs and challenges.
4. Staying Healthy
Fuel your brain with nutritious snacks that enhance focus and energy. Keep healthy options like nuts, fruits and granola bars within reach. Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day. Incorporate regular physical activity into your routine. Whether it’s a walk, yoga or a quick workout, movement boosts circulation and cognitive function. Take short breaks during study sessions to refresh your mind.
5. Time Management Techniques
Learn to manage your time efficiently. Techniques like the Pomodoro Technique (25-minute focused work sessions followed by 5-minute breaks) can help improve concentration and prevent burnout. Avoid procrastinating by adopting the mindset of: “if you can do it today, don’t leave it for tomorrow”.
6. Exam Day Essentials
Prepare a kit for exam days. Include your identification document, stationery (including multiple pens, pencils, highlighters, an eraser, a ruler and a calculator), water, a watch (take note that most examination regulations prohibit smart watches) and tissues. Arrive early to reduce stress and avoid panicked crowds of students who are cramming before the examination session starts. Make sure that you are aware of the examination regulations and abide by them.
Your matric exam survival kit checklist
Here’s a short checklist to pack the night before every paper:
- admission letter and ID
- two or more black pens, pencils, eraser, sharpener, ruler
- calculator (with a spare battery), for the papers where it’s allowed
- highlighters for reading the question paper
- clear water bottle and a light snack for before the exam
- a normal watch (smartwatches and phones aren’t allowed)
- tissues
Read the exam rules on the back of your admission letter so nothing gets confiscated. Packing the night before also makes it easier to get to bed on time. Here’s why that matters: The Secret Study Session Happening While You Sleep. If nerves are getting to you, read Overcoming Test Anxiety.
