B.Sc. and B.Sc. Extended Programmes

Summary.

Students who do not get into Medicine with the first admission select to study the B.Sc. Biological Sciences at the University of Pretoria. After six months, approximately the top 50 students in the B.Sc. Programme are accepted into Medicine

The marks after six months are selected as follows: 25% for Physics, 25 % for Chemistry and 25% for MLB (Molecular and cell Biology) and the final 25% is calculated from the performance in the other disciplines that include medical terminology, psychology and sociology.

We have vast experience in the material tested and we have compiled an extensive data base with past papers from the last 15 years. We have compiled brilliant summaries and numerous assignments and memoranda to ensure that our students are always a few steps ahead of the mainstream.

The students who gained admission into Medicine from the previous year act as mentors to all our first-year students.

This programme is an extremely rigorous one that requires a great deal of focus and commitment. We do not only offer the academic support, but also the emotional support to ensure that the maximum number of our students succeed.
Students who wish to study Medicine or B.Sc. Biological Sciences but who do not meet the minimum requirements for the B.Sc. Programme, could be eligible to register for the B.Sc. Extended degree.

This allows them to do the same work as the B.Sc. students but at a slower pace. They typically cover the first six months work over the period of a year. After the first six to eight months the top fifteen students are eligible to study Medicine. They then start first year Medicine the following year.

Subjects Offered.

Seventh Star - University Assistance - Icon Set - Physics

Physics - 131, 133 & 134

The course deals with an array of topics which ranges from mechanics, thermodynamics and optics to nuclear physics.
The average of our 50 B.Sc. students for Physics in the first six months in 2019 was a staggering 83%.
Seventh Star - University Assistance - Icon Set - Chemistry

Chemistry - 117, 133 & 143

The course is taught by a team of highly experienced lecturers, including Professor Schoeman (former head of Chemistry at the University of Pretoria for 20 years), who have achieved some outstanding results over the last couple of years.
Seventh Star - University Assistance - Icon Set - MLB

MLB - 111, 133 & 143

This subject is regarded as particularly difficult and a former top B.Sc. student has been tutoring this subject for the last few years with great success. It deals with a great volume of work and we help students hone their study skills and how to approach all these subjects differently.
Seventh Star - University Assistance - Icon Set - Calculus

Calculus - 133 & 143

We also assist the students who wish to study Veterinary Science with Calculus lessons.

Results.

1 in 3
Medicine after the first six months of the B.Sc. Biological Sciences Programme. This is also an approximate third of the official students who are selected on merit at the university. These students are selected from about 850 B.Sc. Biological Science students.

19 of our students were successful of getting into Medicine after the first six months of the B.Sc. Biological Science students in 2019 which is an even better success rate than the previous year.

This is clearly the best odds that any talented, ambitious and passionate teenager will have to study Medicine – we improve their chances from one in thousands, from one in 850 to approximately 1 in 3.

Those are really good odds and clearly a sound investment.
350+
It is so hard to keep track of how many students we have helped to get into Medicine and Veterinary Science over the last few years, but we certainly know that we have aided 100+ students to get into Medicine through our B.Sc. Biological Sciences Programme over the last eight years.

We have also had more than 80 of our extra lesson students get straight into Medicine, Veterinary Science, Dentistry and Physiotherapy, based on the strength of their matric and NBT results, over the last three years.

From what we know we have helped more than 200 students get into Medicine based solely on the strength of their NBT results over the last three years.

This is an astonishing feat and we believe that we are arguably the only educational organization that can lay claim to such achievements.

All-in-all we can comfortably say that we have helped hundreds of students get into Medicine and other Health Sciences over the last few years.

Summary.

Over the last few years we have not only tutored B.Sc. Biological Science students, but have also built a reputation for helping first year Medicine students from the University of Pretoria, University of Witwatersrand and Medunsa achieve outstanding results.

It is well-known that the transition from school to university can be challenging and it is questionable whether our educational system adequately prepares students for tertiary studies.
We also tend to attract students who want to achieve outstanding results and who desire to do well.

We have become a centre of excellence for university students who want to go the extra mile.

Summary.

The degree of Engineering is notoriously regarded as difficult and challenging with drop-out rates of up to 40% in the first year.

For the last five years we have aided first year Engineering students from the University of Pretoria and Witwatersrand with tutoring in challenging subjects. Not only do we explain key concept but also provide a structured learning approach to accommodate the robust schedule of an Engineering student.

Subjects Offered.

Seventh Star - University Assistance - Icon Set - Physics

Physics - FSK 176

This is a semester course in the first year and covers the general Mechanics topics of statics, kinematics, projectile motion, momentum and impulse, work, power, energy and elastic potential energy, centre of mass and rotational motion. We teach this semester course in both semesters.
Seventh Star - University Assistance - Icon Set - Chemistry

Chemistry - CHM 171

This is also a semester course and covers all topics that range from bonding, Lewis structures and molecular geometry, stoichiometry types of reactions and thermochemistry. We also have a data base of past tests and examination papers which have proven to be of great value to our students. We also teach this semester course in both semesters.
Seventh Star - University Assistance - Icon Set - Mechanics

Mechanics - SWK

This subject has proven to be quite a hurdle for most first-year students. One of our former top achievers who is now an Engineering graduate has tutored this subject for us for the last three years and this has certainly helped students to master this challenging discipline. This subject is also a semester course.
Seventh Star - University Assistance - Icon Set - Calculus

Calculus - WTW 158 & 164

This subject has proven to be one of the most problematic for first year students to pass. The jump from high school is significant and students need to apply themselves and work extremely hard to pass and do well. The extra two hours that students do with us a week is not only an opportunity to get things explained again and perhaps in greater detail, but it is also an opportunity for them to get extra practice and exercise. We have found this strategy to be successful as we have helped most students to pass, and some do extremely well. This subject is a year course.
Seventh Star - University Assistance - Icon Set - Electronics

Electronics - EBN

This subject has also proven to be a challenge for most students, but with the help of our brilliant lecturer we have maintained a 100% pass rate in this subject for the last three years. This subject is also a semester course.

Results.

95%
On average about 65% of first year engineering students pass all their subjects at the University of Pretoria and the University of Witwatersrand.

The pass rate of our first-year engineering students for the last three years has been 95%.

Our tutoring clearly provides first-year students with the support to succeed and excel in their studies.

  • Dear Sir, a great teacher is like a candle – it consumes itself to light the way for others. This is exactly what you have done for all of us, the hours, sweat and tears we have put you through and yet you always believe in our abilities and light up that tunnel for us so we are able to live our dreams. Dear sir, my parents always tell me that I owe a part of this degree to you and I would just like to thank you a million times over. I promise to look after you and write your scripts for free…
